Born and raised in the Wallaceburg area, I always knew that I would return to my hometown. Having graduated from Petrolia High School with a keen interest in Business studies, I was drawn to the Business Co-op Program at Niagara College. There, I studied Business Management with a focus on Human Resources. After my studies were completed, I followed the love of my life, Nicole, to Ottawa and was hired at Jack Fraser Menswear where I soon became Manager. After 3 very successful years with the company, new challenges awaited me and I joined TD Waterhouse as a Financial Representative.

I obtained my Canadian Securities Course and was well on my way. With the crash of the tech stocks, my job became a lot less in demand and I was on the move again this time ending up in Scotland with Nicole as she pursued her studies. Upon completion of her studies, we decided to head back to Wallaceburg and start our lives together in our hometown. My career path from there has taken many turns along the way, and with each new challenge came a great learning opportunity. Most importantly, it led me to my current role with Southwest Regional Credit Union.

Continue reading "Introducing the Wallaceburg New Branch Manager- Travis Hooper!"

Wouldn't it be nice if we all had a crystal ball to predict the future of the markets- to know exactly where to put our money and when. Instead, recent market turbulence has us weighing our investment options more than ever.

On the one hand, there's the ever dependable term deposits and savings accounts to invest into, guaranteeing principal but offering perhaps a lower interest rate than we're all after. On the other hand, there's the allure of mutual funds and the stock market, touting the potential for higher returns but also the risk of losing the money we started out with. Why not have the best of both worlds?

Continue reading "Southwest Regional's Investment Update"

Everyone has been impacted by the current financial crisis. Financial markets continue to slide in reverse, consumer demand both domestic and globally remains weak and rates continue to fall in an effort to simulate the economy. Many financial institutions, including Credit Unions, are not immune to the economic climate. Most financial institutions are financially strong and they will weather the storm reasonable well but they will need to address certain issues, most notably will be financial margin. Financial margin is defined as the difference between the member's borrowing costs and what the financial pays it depositors for their deposits so that they in turn can lend money out to their borrowers. The profit is used to pay expenses and build reserves.

Borrowing rates are primarily determined by the Bank of Canada Prime ate. Governments have been lowering this rate in an effort to stimulate consumer spending. The current Bank of Canada Prime Rate is 2.5%. This is a record low.

Continue reading "Southwest Regional Economic Update"

Southwest Regional Credit Union Ltd.’s origins date back to May 1939 with its first members being individuals belonging to small church group in Moore Township. The Credit Union began with 13 members with share capital of $12.61 and an office that operated out of the Moore Center Hall in the Township of Moore. Within a short period of time, the office was moved to a Hatchery in Brigden and arrangements were made to receive deposits and loan payments within various communities of Moore Township. The Royal Credit Union, as it was named then, had its first Annual Meeting in January 1940.

During 1940, membership grew to 42 members and share capital of $544.77 was established. In late 1940, the Credit Union was given its Charter from the Provincial Government and the name of the Credit Union was changed to Moore Credit Union.

Continue reading "The History of Southwest"
